Telenet en Interkabel hebben afgelopen nacht hun voorakkoord omgezet in een definitieve overeenkomst. De kansen van Belgacom om de bijna 800.000 tv-klanten van de koepel van de vier Vlaamse kabeltelevisiebedrijven binnen te halen, zijn daarmee serieus geslonken.
Het verhaal gaat terug tot november vorig jaar. Toen sloot Telenet een voorakkoord met Interkabel over de overname van de tv-klanten en het verwerven van extra gebruiksrechten op de netten van de alliantieleden.
Belgacom zag deze belangrijke versterking van rivaal Telenet niet graag gebeuren. Het kwam dan ook in het verweer. Eerst door, tot nu toe vergeefs, een reeks gerechtelijke procedures aan te spannen. Eerder deze maand volgde dan een niet-bindend tegenbod. De beduidend hogere prijs zaaide twijfel bij de aandeelhouders van de vier kabelbedrijven.
Het tegenbod van Belgacom leek tot een impasse te leiden. Want Interkabel wees Belgacom niet meteen de deur, maar ging ook niet op het voorstel in. De alliantie kaatste de bal naar Telenet. Het Mechelse bedrijf liet echter formeel weten zijn bod niet te zullen optrekken.
Vorige week bleek evenwel dat Telenet en Interkabel, ondanks de schijnbare impasse, toch een uitweg zochten. De gesprekken, die deze week erg intens waren, leidden tot een doorbraak. Telenet zou zijn bod verhoogd hebben tot 427 miljoen euro.
Dat Telenet meer biedt, is gezien zijn eerdere verklaringen merkwaardig. Maar het bedrijf stond onder grote druk. ‘Interkabel maakte zeer duidelijk dat er meer geld op tafel diende te komen’, zegt een bron.
Alle klanten blijven verder genieten van analoge televisie en het digitale aanbod van Indi, het zusterbedrijf van Interkabel voor digitale tv. Vrij snel zal ook interactieve televisie van Telenet beschikbaar zijn voor de Interkabel-klanten, meldt Interkabel in zijn persbericht. Telenet zou voor het einde van dit jaar zijn diensten uitrollen in het Interkabel-gebied.
Voor de formele afronding van het akkoord is het wachten op de goedkeuring van de raden van bestuur van de intercommunales. Zij hebben daarvoor tijd tot eind september.
Belgacom kan nog terugslaan met een nieuw bod. Maar bij Interkabel is afgesproken dat geen kans meer te geven. ‘Het voorstel van Belgacom is niet bindend en dus onzeker. Bovendien willen de meeste gemeenten dat er toch nog concurrentie blijft tussen twee volwaardige infrastructuren (Belgacom en Telenet). Die concurrentie is de beste garantie voor de tarieven en de kwaliteit’, zegt een insider.
'Binnen de raden van bestuur bestaat de vaste overtuiging dat de verschillende gemeenten deze overeenkomst ondersteunen en dat de samenwerking met Telenet de beste keuze is', stelt Interkabel.
Telenet hangen voorts nog gerechtelijke procedures boven het hoofd die Belgacom inleidde bij de Raad van State en de rechtbank van eerste aanleg. Maar vooraleer deze instanties zich over de kwestie uitspreken, zijn Telenet en Interkabel waarschijnlijk al lang gefusioneerd.

iPhone 3G - Belgian Operators and their "Data Tarrif" plans
really great too. Just like the first iPhone. But what makes the
Mobile Internet really take off? There are 3 points needed. See the
second pic. The iPhone brings in two of the three. The third is in the
hands of the mobile operators. And frankly, non of the Belgian mobile
operators hasn't understood it yet. They charge €25 or €50 for XXMB
[which they then call "unlimited", hahaha). Who knows how much MB is
when you're doing some casual surfing on your iphone?!
We need some decent data tariff plans in Belgian! Come on Mobistar,
Proximus and BASE. Give us a decent data plan!! Or provice a nation-
wdie Wifi network, either way is fine :-D [I'd prefer the last idea
really,just imagine!!)

Newspaper figures from World Newspaper Association [WAN] taken into perspective
Piet Bakker, Professor at the Amsterdam University, writes on his blog [www.newspaperinnovation.com] how the latest figures from WAN on newspaper circulation are completely bollocks!
The World Association of Newspapers announced their new World Press Trends at the World Editors Forum in Göteborg. Total paid circulation has risen with no less than 2.57 percent, and with 9.39 percent over the last five years. When free newspapers are included, global circulation increased with 3.65 percent in 2007, and with 14.3 percent over the past five years.
Crisis? What crisis?
Within these encouraging data, however, there are some odd figures popping up. At the end of the press release, WAN gives a list of the free dailies with the highest circulation:
"Leggo in Italy (1.95 million copies), Metro in the United Kingdom (1.37 million copies), 20 Minutos in Spain (1 million copies), Metro in Canada (990,000 copies), and Que! and ADN in Spain (959,000 copies each)."
In fact, the Leggo circulation is only half of this, as can be read on the Leggo webpage (click on 'chi siamo' on the upper right side - Italian for beginners: "passed the historic wall of a million copies":
"Oggi "Leggo" è presente in 15 città ed ha superato lo storico muro del milione di copie (a partire dal 18 aprile) e di oltre 2 milioni di lettori, certificati dall'Audipress nel 2007."
The data for Metro UK, 20 Minutos, Qué! and ADN are correct, but with Metro Canada WAN is almost 200,000 copies off the mark as can be seen at the Metro homepage: 815,000 instead of 990,000 copies - in 2007 Halifax was not launched yet so 790,000 is the number for that year.

Hillary clinton and Barrack Obama together - first ever
So has Hillary hinted she would except an invitation to become Barack
Obama's running-mate as vice-president? Some say she has sillently
has. This could mean history in the making. BIG history. Fantastic
history! Up 'till now, Democratic voters had to decide if they wanted
a "first ever woman" as president or a "first ever black man" as
president. What first? Now, they could get both, at the same time, in
the White House. As President and vice-president. It doesn't get any
better. This scenario [Hillary Vice-P, Barrack Presdient] has been
suggested as a "dream team" before. But I really believe it would be.
It would mean REAL CHANGE in American politics. It would mean REAL
CHANGE in World politics. It would mean it really is possible for a
black man to become president of the United States of Amerika. For a
woman to serve as the second highest in command in US politics. Would
this mean the REAL END of gender and race discrimination? Wow... I
can't wait!
